Simpson & Partners (EV) Ltd Tethered EV Cable Careand Maintenance

Maintaining a tethered EV cable is primarily about preventing physical damage and protecting connectors from the elements as the cable is permanently attached to the charging unit and cannot be easily swapped out like a portable one.

Core Maintenance Routine

  • Visual inspections: Regularly check the entire length of the cable for cracks, abrasions, or exposed wires. Pay special attention to the point where the cable meets the charging box and the connector handle.
  • Cleaning the cable: Use a damp cloth to wipe down the outer insulation to remove dirt, salt, or grime.
  • Cleaning connectors: Use a dry cloth or a cotton bud (Q-tip) to gently remove debris from the connector pins. Never use water or chemicals directly on the metal contacts as this can cause corrosion or short circuits.
  • Proper coiling: Always coil the cable according to its natural alignment to avoid internal kinks or wire breakage. Avoid wrapping it too tightly around the charger unit.

Storage and Protection

  • Use a cable hook: When not in use, hang your tethered cable with the charger connector facing downwards to prevent water ingress and to allow for water drainage.
  • Keep it off the ground: Never leave the cable or connector lying on the floor where it can be stepped on, driven over, or exposed to puddles.
  • Sun protection: If your charger is in direct sunlight, ensure the cable is shielded if possible. Extended UV exposure can degrade the outer insulation over time.
  • EV plug wall holster: We recommend using a weatherproof wall mounted EV plug wall holster in combination with a S&P wall hook to help prolong the life of your Tethered cable.
