Why We Built an EV Charger Specifically for Holiday Lets

Only 33% of UK holiday homes currently have on-site EV charging.

That means 2 in 3 properties are invisible to a fast-growing segment of guests who actively filter for charging when they search on Airbnb, Booking.com and Expedia. If you don't have it listed, you simply don't show up. We know this because our customers kept telling us.

It Started with a Phone Call

Over the years, a number of our customers turned out to be holiday let owners. And once they'd installed one of our home chargers, they'd ring us with the same questions:

"Can guests use it? How would they pay for it? Is it reliable enough that I'm not going to get a call on a Friday night when something's not working?"

Every time, I had to be honest. Our home charger is brilliant for what it's designed for: one household, one or two cars, light regular use. But a holiday let is a completely different environment. Different guests every week. Different vehicles. Year-round commercial use. And the need to bill guests accurately for electricity they've actually consumed which, under UK regulations, requires certified metering that most chargers don't include.

So we did what we always do. We went away and built something specifically for it.

Introducing Holiday Series

Holiday Series is our first EV charger engineered from the ground up for holiday let properties. Not a domestic charger with a sticker on it. Not a commercial charger built for public car parks. Something purpose-built for exactly this environment and the owners and guests who use it. Here's what that means in practice.

Hassle-free guest payments via TAP Electric.

Guests scan the QR code on the charger, pay through the TAP Electric app and the money goes straight into your account. It's free to you. No chasing, no invoices, no awkward checkout conversations. Or if you'd rather handle it yourself and you live close-by, check the Simpson & Partners app to see exactly what each guest used in kWh and send your guests a payment link before they leave. Either way, it's simple and transparent.

OFGEM-compliant MID meters included as standard.

If you're billing guests for electricity by the kilowatt hour (which is what makes commercial sense) UK regulations require certified MID metering for accurate, legally defensible billing. Most chargers on the market don't include this. Holiday Series has it built in from day one. No extras, no retrofit, no compliance gap as regulations tighten.

Built to last.

Metal construction, not plastic. Engineered to handle coastal air, Scottish winters and years of different guests without fading or cracking. Backed by a 10-year enclosure warranty and a 5-year electronics warranty. Close to zero downtime: because a faulty charger doesn't just inconvenience one guest, it shows up in negative reviews and those follows your property around for years.

Untethered design.

No cable permanently attached to the unit. Every EV driver already has a cable in their car (it comes with their vehicle). So guests bring their own, plug in and charge. This avoids compatibility issues, eliminates cables getting warn from multiple guests tugging and dragging the cable across the ground and a much neater look on your wall when the charger isn't in use.

132 colour combinations.

Because your charger should enhance your property, not stick out like a sore thumb. Metal or wood lids. Wall mount or freestanding. Each colour curated with residential architecture in mind. You can match them to painted render, Cotswold stone, red brick and timber cladding. It gives you a charger that looks like it was always meant to be there. If your charger is on show , it can actually enhance promotional photos. The point is, guests like to feel as though you've thought of everything. And EV chargers are a home from home addition. Even if they don't come in an EV, they feel that your property had already thought of this if and this perception lasts.

The Numbers Are Worth Knowing

If you're currently offering free EV charging to guests, you may not have thought much about what it's costing you.

Here's the number: just 2 charging sessions a week, averaging 8 hours each, costs around £1,426 a year in electricity. Going out of your business. Unreimbursed. And that's the conservative estimate based on just 2 sessions a week. If you've got more bedrooms, busier properties giveaway significantly more.

Switch to paid charging at a fair, competitive kWh rate and that same usage could generate up to £2,500 a year in revenue. After electricity costs, that's up to £1,074 net profit. Every year. More if your guests charge more often.

Guests understand and expect to pay for charging. They do it at public chargers, hotels, workplaces and at their home. You're not being unreasonable. You're running a business. And our research shows that guests time and time again leave money literally on the table because their owner didn't ask them for payment.

With Holiday Series chargers starting from £878 inc VAT and standard installation from £425, most owners see full payback in around 12 months. After that it's pure income, stay after stay, year after year.

We've built a free cost calculator so you can see what the numbers look like for your specific property. It takes about two minutes and it's worth doing before anything else.

What Our Customers Say

Simon White runs Coillemore House near the Isle of Skye. It's a stunning 10-bed manor 40 minutes from the nearest public EV charger. Before installing Holiday Series, guests with EVs were plugging in through a window.

"We were surprised to have multiple guests from the south east and London driving up in electric vehicles. There's more demand than we initially believed. Having on-site EV charging is the perfect home-from-home feature."

He chose Neptune Blue with a mid oak lid to sit naturally against the Georgian stone walls. His local electrician fitted it without any fuss.

Emma at Beaumont House Hotel in Cheltenham takes a more commercial view.

"It makes the hotel appear higher up in the ranking on Booking.com and Expedia guests can tick 'EV charger' and we pop up immediately. I estimate 10% of our business is repeat bookings from EV-driving guests throughout the year. I have particularly noticed repeat business from guests with electric cars. They like knowing the chargers always work. We haven't had any negative reviews since installing Simpson & Partners chargers."

And Nemia at Nuthatch Retreat in the Forest of Dean chose Holiday Series for the design.

"We'd witnessed the frankly ugly and cumbersome chargers on the market and wanted an alternative that reflected the attention to design detail we'd given to all other aspects of the property."

Three very different properties. Same outcome, better reviews, repeat bookings and a revenue stream that runs itself.
