What is OCPP compliance?

9 December 2024

All S&P Business Series and Home Series EV chargers are OCPP compliant. S&P chargers are operationally integrated with trusted EV charging platforms such as Tap, Fuuse and Clenergy.

Models include: Business Series Freestanding (single socket and dual socket) 7kW, 22kW and Business Series Wall Mount (single socket) 7kW, 22kW.

Home Series Wall mount (7kw and 22kW) and Home Series Freestanding (22kW).

But what is OCPP compliance?

OCPP stands for Open Charge Point Protocol. It’s a great open standard protocol used in the electric vehicle (EV) industry. OCCP facilitates the communication between charging stations (also known as Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment or EVSE) and network operators or central management systems.

Open Standard: OCPP is an open standard, which means it’s free for anyone to use and implement. OCPP is essentially software and plays a vital behind the scenes role in the development of the electric vehicle charging infrastructure. It promotes openness, interoperability, and encourages collaboration and innovation within the EV industry. Basically, it’s like the glue that helps all the charging stations and networks chat with each other effortlessly. It act as like a universal translator for chargers, making sure they all speak the same language, making EV’s more accessible for all.

  1. Interoperability: One of the primary purposes of OCPP is to ensure interoperability between different brands of EV charging stations and network operators. By adhering to the OCPP standard, manufacturers of EV chargers can ensure that their equipment can communicate effectively with other components in the EV ecosystem, regardless of the brand.
  2. Language for Communication: OCPP serves as a common “language” for communication between EV charging stations and central management systems. It defines the format and structure of messages exchanged between these components, allowing them to exchange information such as charging status, billing data, and operational commands.
  3. Facilitating Growth: By promoting interoperability and standardisation, OCPP helps to remove barriers to the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. EV owners have a wider choice of charging infrastructure that seamlessly work with different providers, which is crucial for the growth of the EV market.
David Simpson implemented OCPP on all Home Series models back in February 2024. Read his blog 👉 here.👈
